Self–Harm

Self-harm refers to the deliberate harming of one’s own body. Self-harm can take many forms. People of all ages and backgrounds self-harm. There is no one typical person who hurts themselves.

Some of the reasons that people may self-harm include:

–          Expressing or coping with emotional distress

–          Trying to feel in control

–          A way of punishing themselves

–          Relieving unbearable tensions (this could include exam stress)

–          A response to intrusive thoughts

If you have any concerns about a young person’s immediate safety, this is an absolute priority and should be treated as an emergency and take the young person to A&E.
