Science

Head of Faculty – Mrs Berg

Mind – Science by its very nature is the study of curious phenomenon and learning to explain how the workings of the world around us. As such our curriculum at Key Stage 3 is taught thematically, with topics having an overarching theme, which encompasses applied learning from the three disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. By using this broad and deep applied approach, our learners will have a better understanding of the interconnectivity of scientific ideas. Thus, allowing them to develop into better critical thinkers, inspiring creativity, and original thinking. The lessons build transferable skills of independence and resilience in a safe and nurturing environment where pupils feel comfortable to challenge or question their own learning as well as the teachings of others.

Body – Science in all Key Stages promotes the preparation of our young people for the next stage of their education and adulthood by ensuring that the teaching of science provides opportunities for pupils to consider how their own learning in science contributes to the decision-making processes relating to future employment, independence, community inclusion and their own health and wellbeing. We want our pupils to be decent moral members of society and we offer all learners from all backgrounds the opportunity to learn
about concepts and theories that might not match their own, in an open, respectful, and yet scientifically critical forum. This way, our young people learn an appreciation, awe, and recognition of different points of view.

Spirit – Our Science curriculum is planned to develop and encourage a ‘can do, work hard’ mindset in learners. We recognise that every student is different, and that the curriculum must be relevant and accessible to all. Therefore, we offer a variety of courses such as Triple Science and A Levels that allow
our most able to be stretched and challenged, while allowing success for all. In our lesson’s learners will study how to make positive choices such as how different drugs, diet and diseases affect the body. They will also master how to manipulate chemical reactions in a safe and regulated way, judging risks and how to keep themselves safe.
